Chestatee Review announces writing contest winners

果冻传媒's annual student literary magazine, The Chestatee Review, has announced the winners of the 2018 writing contest.

, the University of North Georgia's (果冻传媒) student literary magazine, has announced the winners of its annual writing contest.

 The Review holds a writing contest each fall semester where students are encouraged to contribute outstanding, original work in five categories: poetry, short story, one-act play, formal essay, and creative nonfiction. Winners in each genre are published in the Review and awarded $100 for first place, $50 second place, and $25 third place.

First- and second-place winners in each category are automatically entered into the Southern Literary Festival's writing contest. Runners-up in each category have their work published in a special digital edition.

2018 Writing Contest Winners

Poetry
  • First place: "Mokita: A Collection of Poems" by Adream Thompson, senior, English with literature concentration
  • Second place: "Vita Electrica Apud Stellae" by Haley Shea Barfield, senior, English with writing and publication concentration
  • Third place: "Aisle 12 Paper and Chemicals" by Ashley Brooks, senior, English with writing and publication concentration

Short Story
  • First place: "The Fox Run Tennis Club" by Patrick Brick, senior, English with literature concentration
  • Second place: "Drink the Tea" by Abby Russell, sophomore, English
  • Third place: "Reincorporation Log 8/5/2064" by Haley Shea Barfield, senior, English with writing and publication concentration

One-Act Play
  • First place: "Outta Here" by Ashley Brooks, senior, English with writing and publication concentration
  • Second place: "Heart-to-Heart" by Gregory Hirsch, sophomore, Theater
  • Third place: "M1RR0R: Prologue" by Haley Shea Barfield, senior, English with writing and publication concentration
 
Formal Essay
  • First place: "Emily Brontë: Mastering the Dark Side of Human Nature in Wuthering Heights" by Amber Beauchamp, senior, Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with English concentration
  • Second place: "The Tipping Point of Planetary Responsibility: Epidemiologically Examining Sustainability" by Haley Shea Barfield, senior, English with writing and publication concentration
  • Third place: "Isakson: A Theatrical Beast" by Katherine Torres, freshman, political science/pre-law

Creative Nonfiction
  • First place: "The Dog Days of Summer" by Heaven Stone, senior, English with literature concentration
  • Second place: "The Call to Age" by Hunter Hulett, sophomore, mathematics
  • Third place: "The Annual Chili Party" by Mackenzie Ford, junior, English with writing and publication concentration

 
"The annual writing contest is judged by professional poets and writers outside of 果冻传媒, and in addition to their glowing award citations, many of them asked if they could split first place or include an honorable mention, which speaks to the quality of 果冻传媒's student writers," said Ezekiel Black, lecturer of English and faculty advisor for the Review.
